In history, bridesmaids were seen as part of the bridal infantry. They traveled with the bride to the groom’s village and serviced as a shield to ward off anyone who tried to intervene. According to Roman law, ten witnesses were required at a wedding in order to defend the couple from evil spirits. Groomsmen and bridesmaids dressed like the couple in order to confuse the evil spirits. Stemming from these past beliefs, today bridesmaid dresses are chosen to complement the bride’s dress and the bridesmaids themselves are a support system rather than infantry.

One of the hardest decisions will be deciding who to include in the bridal party. I’ve seen as many as seven bridesmaid or as little as only three or not having any at all. It’s important to keep in mind the size of the event and the venue, 10 might me a little much for an intimate wedding and cramming that many into a small venue looks awkward and uncomfortable.
What are bridesmaids responsibilities?
– Bridal shower
-Random tasks like helping address invites or create favors, fluffing the bride’s dress,
helping with the rehearsal dinner, acting as hosts and more.
– Starting the dance on the dancefloor
Bridesmaids dresses don’t always have to match. Many don’t have the luxury to buy dresses for their bridal party and some bridesmaids don’t have the ability to buy another dress. A good piece of advice: pick a color or a few colors and have bridesmaids pick their own dress. Rather that means the bridal party can buy a new dress or choose an old one, price is in their hands and they will choose dresses they are comfortable in and fit their body type.
